Are you really interested in software engineering?

Wanting to be a software engineer doesn't always means being interested in software engineering

  • DBZ

It may sound strange but just because you want to do something doesn't necessarily mean are interested in the thing you want to do. A quick example would be wanting to be a software engineer because you think you'll become rich but realizing that you detest spending your day writing code. Or another example could be wanting to be a software engineer so you can build your own startup but realizing that the parts of a startup you want to focus your time on are business and sales. While this doesn't mean you shouldn't spend your time learning about software engineering, it probably means software engineering will simply complement whatever you're really interested in.

There are a few ways you can determine if you have a passion for solving problems with code:

Take online coding challenges or participate in hackathons: These types of events can be a great way to test your skills and see if you enjoy the problem-solving aspect of programming.

Build small projects on your own: Try building a small project on your own, such as a simple website or application. This will give you a chance to see if you enjoy the process of designing and building something from scratch.

Join a coding community or meetup group: Connecting with others who are passionate about coding can be a great way to get a sense of what it's like to work as a software engineer. You can join online communities or attend local meetups to see if you enjoy working with others to solve problems with code.

Consider your interests and hobbies: Do you enjoy puzzles or problem-solving activities in your free time? If you enjoy tackling challenges and finding solutions, you may have a passion for solving problems with code.

Ultimately, the best way to determine if you have a passion for solving problems with code is to try it out and see how it feels. It may take some experimentation and exploration to figure out if programming is the right fit for you, but with time and practice, you should be able to get a good sense of whether or not it's something you enjoy.
